The Art of original

“Toronto is seeing its biggest change in well over a century.”

In our increasingly intensifying cities, rare is the opportunity to work with a building site that occupies a deep, full city block. Building on the expansive former location of the legendary furniture store that inspired its name, the Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos is poised to create something truly special. This mixed commercial-residential building will not only transform its immediate location, but will serve as a catalyst for future development along Yonge Street.

Spaces are designed to create seamless transitions between interior and exterior, so that one becomes the extension of the other. Expansive glass walls and open air spaces afford extraordinary views, incorporating the city as a visual element of the overall design.

Designed by respected architecture firm architectsAlliance, the project includes a 28-storey tower on the north side of the site, which steps down to a loft style 12-storey podium on the south side to respect the more traditional scale of the buildings southward on Yonge. Comprising loft units and tower suites, the building is designed with a holistic approach, ensuring a connection between every facet of the development – from the built form, to interior details and landscaping, to its relationship with the street. All of which emphasize the interrelationship between elements.

While careful to respect and preserve the integrity of its surrounding neighbourhood, the project will also bring much needed change, with two floors of retail space at the base of the building that will animate the street life on this part of Yonge. With lifestyle-focused shops and services, restaurants and cafes planned for this destination retail space, the project will bring more pedestrian traffic to the area and strongly connect the building to the neighbourhood. Great buildings make great cities. And the Art Shoppe stands to make an important contribution to the fabric of Toronto.
