Taking up an entire city block, Art Shoppe Condos is an ambitious new development coming to Yonge and Eglinton. CD Capital Developments and Freed Developments have teamed up for the project, which consists of a 28-storey tower on the north side of the site and a 12 storey mid-rise building of lofts to the south.
The builders behind the project will be opening the new presentation gallery at 2131 Yonge Street later this month and recently held an informal presser about their undertaking. Both real estate watchers and fashion press came out to the event, which helped put the project in perspective as well as shed some light on the condo’s headline-grabbing partnership with Designer Karl Lagerfeld, who will be designing the lobbies of both buildings.
It’s an industry first – Lagerfeld has never worked on a condo project in North America before. Peter Freed, the head of Freed Developments, told the crowd that their meetings with the legend in Paris had been productive, with Lagerfeld interested in every detail.
“The man works,” said Freed. He described Lagerfeld as a prolific designer and a pleasure to work with, given his focus and meticulousness. The process has just begun, however, so there’s no intel yet on what ‘Lobbies by Karl Lagerfeld’ will look like.
The sales centre, which was hosting a large-scale fete for Lagerfeld that evening (it was his first time in Canada), also features a scale model and two model suites.
Art Shoppe Condos will feature 652 units, ranging from 315 to 1,985 square feet in size. The project will also include 80,000 square feet of retail spread across two levels.
The developers emphasized the location at Yonge and Eglinton, a major transit hub that currently has subway access but will also be a major stop on the new Crosstown Eglinton LRT.
Besides transit, the midtown neighbourhood also has a number of schools and parks within walking distance and is undergoing massive change with new retail and residential projects underway. Freed noted that the City of Toronto estimates the neighbourhood population will double in the next 10 to 15 years.
